Sturmwind Release Today!

That's right, yet another game gets set to grace our beloved console with the combined effort of Duranik and Redspotgames coming to the Dreamcast in the shape of shoot-em up, Sturmwind. Many Dreamcast fans were skeptical if the game would ever see the light of day seeing as it was originally supposed to be released on November 11, 2011, the ill-fated 11-11-11 day. But from today fans will be able to test out this completely new title which features some fantastic looking visuals, which are probably the best we have seen from an indie game. As with other indie releases for the Dreamcast, the game is region free, so it will work on all MIL-CD-compatible systems, and it also fully supports the VMU, rumble pack, arcade stick and best of all the VGA.

Here's a press release by Redspotgames setting the scene with a little back-story for the game,

"The fierce enemy‘s troops have already reached our world‘s doorsteps and we are running out of time! Our reconnaissance drones have detected 16 promising locations for our search of „Mother“, the planet of our living ancestors. After several development steps by Duranik and redspotgames the launch date for your mission is clear.

Sturmwind pilots, your all-dominant mission will begin on April 24th 2013. All documents will be sent to you until this very date.

Fight over 20 boss enemies in 16 levels. In addition to the so-called “Award Trophy System”, there will also be an internet highscore list in which your performance can compete against each other worldwide. Your wings of steel are now our last resort.

Stay ready for further instructions. Over and out."

The regular release is being sold at Playasia for $40 while those with a fetish for octopuses can pick up a soft toy like the one above with the limited edition for a whopping $130, although you do get at least get a game guidebook and soundtrack as well.

Personally, I am holding out for a review before I pick up this one. To be honest, to me, Karous being the final game to be officially authorized by Sega and receiving a GD-rom press, was the last "real" Dreamcast game. I was also burnt with the debacle that was the re-release of Last Hope and probably more importantly, just not very good at shooting games. Of course, it is always great to see a new addition to the Dreamcast library but here's hoping that developers will one day look at other genres when producing for the console. Games like a Pier Solar HD are a start but a new beat-em up would be a dream; hell I'd give my left ball for a patched version of Powerstone with online play.
